Skid steers at a glance

TypeWidthBest onTypical jobs
Wheeled skid steer~1.5–1.8 mHard ground, concreteSite clean-up, moving material
Tracked (posi-track)~1.5–2 mSoft ground, lawns, slopesLandscaping, earthworks
Mini/narrow loader~1.1 mTight accessBackyards, between houses

Typical class figures — exact machine confirmed on your quote. The 4-in-1 bucket is standard; augers, trenchers, forks, brooms and levelling bars all attach. Digging deep rather than moving dirt? That's an excavator. Spoil shuttle in tight spots: mini dumper.

Good to know

Skid steer questions

Wheels or tracks?

Tracks for soft ground, sand, mud, lawns you'd like to keep, and slopes — they spread the load and grip. Wheels for hard surfaces where tracks wear and skid-turns scuff. If the job crosses a finished lawn, say so: tracks (or boards) save a re-turfing bill.

What attachments can I get?

Four-in-one bucket as standard, then augers, trenchers, pallet forks, brooms, levelling bars and post-hole gear — matched to the machine's hitch and hydraulics. Hire them together and the whole job moves faster.

Do I need a licence?

No national licence class — competency rules, and construction sites typically want a VOC plus your white card. First time on one? They're genuinely quick to learn, but practice away from the fence line.

Will it fit through my side access?

Standard machines want roughly 1.5–1.8 m; narrow and mini loaders squeeze near 1.1 m. Measure the tightest gate, fence pinch or doorway, and we'll match the machine to the gap — it's the same rule as excavators: access first.

Can I tow one myself?

Smaller machines ride on a plant trailer behind a properly rated ute — check your tow capacity and licence. Most customers take delivery instead; it's quoted per job from the nearest yard.

Skid steer or excavator?

Skid steers move, load, spread and level; excavators dig. Lots of jobs want both — the digger makes the hole, the loader moves the spoil and spreads the base. We quote combos all the time.
