Excavator hire questions

Do I need a licence to operate an excavator?

There's no national excavator licence any more — operator competency is what counts. Builders and civil sites usually ask for a VOC (verification of competency) and a site induction. On your own property it's your call, but only operate within your ability.

What size excavator do I need?

The access decides before the dig does: measure the narrowest gate or path the machine must pass, then size up from there. A 1.7–3t mini covers most residential digs; trenching and house cuts like 3–5t; civil work starts at 8t. Send the job and the access and we'll match it.

Is it dry hire or do you supply an operator?

Dry hire is standard — you operate. If you'd rather have it operated, ask when you enquire and we'll see what can be arranged through the network for your dates.

What attachments can I get?

Augers, rock breakers, rippers, tilt buckets, grabs and compaction wheels, matched to the machine's size class and hitch. Hiring the attachment with the excavator is cheaper than discovering sandstone on day two.

How does delivery work?

Smaller machines arrive on a plant trailer or small float, big gear on a proper float — quoted per job from the nearest supplier yard. Tell us about the street and the gate so the right truck turns up, with road plates if we need to protect a driveway.

Can I keep it longer if the dig runs over?

Yes — call or email and we extend the hire with the supplying yard. Weekly rates are much sharper than day rates, so if you think it'll run long, say so up front and we'll quote it that way.
