Size guide

Knuckle booms by reach

SizeWorking height*OutreachUp & over
34ft (electric or diesel)≈ 12 m~6 mGood — compact knuckle
45ft≈ 15.7 m~7.5 mStrong all-rounder
60ft≈ 20.4 m~12 mBig structures & services
80ft+≈ 26 m+~15 m+Major industrial reach

*Typical class figures — exact model confirmed on your quote. The knuckle's party trick is articulation: reach up, then over the top of whatever's in the way. Electric narrow knuckles work indoors on slabs; diesel 4WD units own the site. Straight vertical work on a floor is cheaper on a scissor lift; towable reach is a cherry picker.

Knuckle boom questions

Do I need a licence for a knuckle boom?

Over 11 m of boom — which is most knuckles — yes: the WP high-risk work licence. Under 11 m, trained-and-competent plus the EWPA Yellow Card most sites expect. Check the operator's ticket before booking the big one.

Is a harness mandatory?

Yes — knuckle booms are boom-type platforms, so it's harness on, clipped to the basket anchor, every time. Need harnesses and lanyards with the machine? Ask and we'll arrange them.

Knuckle boom or scissor lift?

If you're going straight up off a flat floor, a scissor is cheaper and gives a bigger deck. The knuckle earns its rate when something's in the way — reaching over a conveyor, into a tree line, across a roof edge, or threading between services.

Electric or diesel knuckle?

Electric narrow knuckles are built for finished floors — quiet, no fumes, non-marking tyres, and they fit through standard double doors. Diesel 4WD units are for outside: rough ground, kerbs and weather.

How much space does it need to set up?

They drive and slew within their own footprint, but check the counterweight tail-swing and the ground: firm and reasonably level. Send a site photo with the enquiry and we'll confirm the machine fits the space before you commit.

What does delivery involve?

Float or truck delivery from the nearest supplying yard, quoted per job. Big booms are heavy — tell us about gates, awnings and soft ground so the right float and route are planned first go.
